The Light Remains
A meditation on light, memory, transformation and return
This work began with a simple thought:
Light, once captured, never rests; it keeps finding us in the darkness, and develops in the emulsion of our memory.
The Light Remains grew from my earlier black-and-white series Silver Requiem, which explored light, memory and the persistence of images long after the moments that created them have passed.
Here, however, the idea moves away from photography altogether.
Light becomes something less tangible — presence, consciousness, remembrance, perhaps even the small part of ourselves that continues travelling after everything familiar has fallen away.
The accompanying song follows that thought into a more metaphysical space. It asks whether memory is really something we retrieve from the past, or whether certain experiences continue to exist somewhere within us, waiting for darkness before becoming visible again.
Maybe we are vessels
Maybe we are doors
Maybe every soul is made
Of something passing through
Maybe what we call remembrance
Is not the past at all
But light returning quietly
Whenever darkness falls
And if the night should take us
Beyond the reach of flame
Something will remember
Something will remain

The Light Remains
[Verse 1]
Before the first horizon
Before the stars had names
Something moved between us
Without a shape or flame
A whisper through the silence
A tremor through the deep
And every place it touched us
Became too bright to sleep
[Pre-Chorus]
Nothing truly vanishes
It only leaves our sight
Waiting in the spaces
Where the unseen gathers light
[Chorus]
Once the light has found us
It never goes away
It circles through the darkness
And waits beneath the grey
It rises through the fractures
Where all our shadows meet
And finds us when we’ve wandered
Beyond what we can keep
Once the light has known us
It carries what we were
Through every silent distance
Through everything that blurs
We may forget the moment
We may forget the name
But somewhere in the darkness
The light remains
[Verse 2]
There are rooms within us
No living hand can close
Corridors of echoes
Where an ancient current flows
Faces without borders
Voices without sound
Things we thought we’d buried
Still moving underground
[Pre-Chorus]
Time can change the surface
And silence change the view
But nothing touched by wonder
Ever quite stops passing through
[Chorus]
Once the light has found us
It never goes away
It circles through the darkness
And waits beneath the grey
It rises through the fractures
Where all our shadows meet
And finds us when we’ve wandered
Beyond what we can keep
Once the light has known us
It carries what we were
Through every silent distance
Through everything that blurs
We may forget the moment
We may forget the name
But somewhere in the darkness
The light remains
[Bridge]
Maybe we are vessels
Maybe we are doors
Maybe every soul is made
Of something passing through
Maybe what we call remembrance
Is not the past at all
But light returning quietly
Whenever darkness falls
And if the night should take us
Beyond the reach of flame
Something will remember
Something will remain
[Final Chorus]
Once the light has found us
It never travels alone
It carries every heartbeat
Through distances unknown
It moves through every absence
It gathers what we lose
And turns within the silence
Until it leads us through
Once the light has known us
No darkness is complete
Somewhere past forgetting
Something still repeats
We may lose the moment
We may lose the name
But somewhere beyond knowing
Somewhere beyond change
Somewhere in the darkness
The light remains
