Nothing Moves in a Straight Line
This one began simply as a new piece of music for testing PULSE — something with enough changes in rhythm, dynamics and structure to give the visualizer plenty to work with.
Somewhere along the way, it stopped feeling like a test track.
The lyric is about detours, changing direction and discovering that the shortest route is rarely the most interesting one. For this version I went back to one of my favourite sounds — cinematic folk in a flowing 6/8, deep male baritone, acoustic guitar, cello, orchestral strings and warm choral harmonies building toward a large final crescendo.
A song about wandering off the map… and finding that perhaps you were never really lost.
Nothing moves in a straight line.

[Verse 1]
The corridor bends where the daylight ends
And the walls lean into the sound
I follow the hum of a broken machine
Through the rooms beneath the ground
There are marks on the floor where I doubled back
There are names I no longer know
Every door that I swore I had closed
Leaves a little more light below
[Pre-Chorus]
I keep counting the steps
But the numbers rearrange
I keep reaching the edge
And the edge has changed
[Chorus]
Nothing moves in a straight line
Not the river, not the flame
Every road that turns away
Still remembers from where it came
Nothing moves in a straight line
Not the blood, not the rain
We go out into the darkness
And come back changed again
[Verse 2]
There’s a pulse in the wire, a ghost in the glass
A delay in the shape of my name
The room gives a shudder, the metre slips
But the body keeps time all the same
I have walked through the plans that I made for myself
Watched them fracture under my feet
And the further I moved from the place I had planned
The more everything started to meet
